Every man looks better in a suit. Whenever someone says that a man “cleans up well”, it’s usually because he has a suit on for a special occasion. But men shouldn’t need a special occasion to “clean up” as there are a number of benefits in wearing a suit more often.

So why should you wear a suit? The clothing we wear affects us in many different ways. Obviously it affects how we look. But it also affects how we feel, how we think, and what others think of us.

How A Suit Affects The Way You Look

This is worth repeating: all men look better in a suit. Even men with an iconically casual style like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg still look better in a suit. Their suits make them appear more composed, mature, and legitimate. Just take a look at the example below. It’s easier to look the part when you suit up.

Suits do a number of things to enhance your appearance. A good suit will do 5 things:

1 Make you appear taller.
2 Make your shoulders seem broader.
3 Highlight your masculinity with the proper silhouette.
4 Make you appear more fit (as in: hide your gut, widen your chest, and fill out your arms)
5 While not a tangible attribute, suited men exude confidence which others find attractive. (More on this in a minute.)

Now for the added bonus:

Wearing a suit sets you apart from the men around you. While you can certainly “get it right” or “get it wrong” with how you wear a suit, getting it wrong is usually automatic when you go casual. Depending on where you are the “suits” to “non-suits” ratio may vary, but those who are dressed well will still stand out. When you stand out (in a good way) you look better compared to others. If you really want to emphasize the benefits listed above AND outshine any competition in the room, go custom. Nothing trumps a custom fitted suit tailored specifically for your body.

How A Suit Affects The Way You Feel

One common reason against wearing a suit is that they are uncomfortable. The wrong suit is uncomfortable. And that’s probably because it doesn’t fit right. But a well-made, properly-fitted suit can and should be comfortable. A custom suit takes it step further with a choice of cut, fabric and many aspects of the fit. A custom suit allows you to choose how you feel in it.Be careful not to confuse comfort and ease. They aren’t the same thing. It is only slightly easier to put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt than to put on a suit. Can a pair of slouchy jeans be comfortable? Absolutely. But just because it is automatic and habitual, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the most comfortable or the most appropriate for all situations. Suits are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Think twice before concluding that the only option is casual. Pairing a suit jacket with fitted jeans can often be the happy medium between too casual and too formal.

How A Suit Affects The Way You Think

First off, an immaculate suit shows that you do think about your appearance. In general, clothing influences your confidence level. It’s easy to understand why you’d be more confident talking to almost anyone in a well-tailored suit than in a pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt. You look and feel better in a suit and this affects how you think. Many men subconsciously stand taller, walk more confidently, feel more important, and more easily make decisions when they “dress the part.” That’s exactly why salesmen, lawyers, and bankers suit up for work.

Pessimistic claims that you’re in a sad emotional state if you rely on clothing for personal validation are missing the point. Just because you do something that makes you feel better about yourself doesn’t mean you’re relying on it to be happy. If there are benefits to be had, why wouldn’t you?

How A Suit Affects What Others Think About You

How you think indirectly affects what others think of you. No need to launch into a motivational speech; You know when you feel better about yourself that others can tell – and reciprocate. Consciously or not, many associate suits with those who are more capable or more willing to make and follow through with difficult decisions – the successful people of the world. We can (and should!) take it upon ourselves to feel good.

Your personal and professional reputation is tied to how you dress. Being the best dressed in the room makes it easier to get your opinion heard. While this can be highly political in the workplace, it still pays to dress well. There are many examples of how a conscious effort to dress well at work can almost immediately change how your peers perceive you. Your suit can express your personality, confidence, and individual style. And you’re familiar with the timeless mantra: “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”

Conclusion

So whether you already own a suit or not, resolve today to wear one more often. If you don’t have one, get one and wear it. You’ll look better, you’ll feel better and you’ll command the respect of your friends and peers. So the best answer to the question “Why wear a suit?’ is another question: Why not?

Taking a dive into the history of groom’s wear we find that the groom used to have more than one outfit on his wedding day. In fact, the groom typically changed three to four times on the big day, with the actual ceremonial garb being the classic black tuxedo.

While the classic groom’s apparel will always be the black tuxedo, this look is beginning to give way to more modern alternatives. Rental tuxedos that tend not to fit or reflect the personality of the wearer (and have probably been married in dozens of times!) are being replaced by alternatives that are specific to the wedding theme and the groom’s personality and style. After all, weddings are personal and ultimately reflect the couple’s relationship and personality.

Now I’m not here to tell you what you have to do but rather give you some options on what you can do to give your wedding its own unique touch. The things that should be considered when deciding what the groom should wear are: fit, personality, location, season, theme, and price.

Whatever the groom decides to wear must come with an impeccable fit. If it doesn’t, he’ll look out of place next to a bride who has undoubtedly gone through several fitting appointments to get her dress to compliment her body in every way possible. She looks like a million bucks, and so should he. Go for a suit or tux that compliments and accentuates the groom’s positive features. Working with a Style Consultant from Dress Code or a professional tailor (and not a retail salesman) is the best way to guarantee a great fit. A man doesn’t have to be James Bond to look like he belongs in a nice suit or tux! (But it certainly doesn’t hurt.)

Consider this: What do you (or what does the groom) wear most often? Some men like the idea of being all dressed up while others prefer a less formal approach. Do you wear suits often? If so, then you may want to go for a tuxedo because it is a step up from your normal wear. If not, a wedding is a perfect time to buy a suit you can wear for the wedding day, but also many years after. Suits are appropriate at the right wedding – don’t limit yourself to just tuxedos!

Also, look for ways to bring your personality into your wedding outfit. Whether it’s colors, details, linings, monograms, or just the way it fits you, try to have what you wear reflect you. You’ll be looking back on your wedding pictures for a lifetime. Show your true colors.

Next, consider where the wedding events will be held. Will it be an outdoor reception? Will it be held at a home, a church, or a reception hall? What is the natural feel of the location? Is it classic, modern, or somewhere in between? While a seersucker suit fits right in at a beachfront wedding it is not the apparel you would wear if your wedding is being held at the Governor’s Mansion. Location will affect color, the style, and some of the product details like whether you should be wearing a vest, or French cuffs on your shirt, or even what style of necktie you’ll wear.

As seasons change, so does fashion. Light greys and tans are wonderful for spring and summer weddings, but they don’t work nearly as well for fall and winter. By contrast, wearing a dark tuxedo or suit in the summer (especially if it’s outdoors – see Location) can be a misstep. The temperature will affect the colors you can and cannot wear – don’t forget that!

Beyond season is time of day. If it’s an evening wedding ceremony and reception, you should dress more formal. Early morning and afternoon weddings can be more casual.

While the theme is typically based on the location and season of the wedding, there are other important aspects to consider. Ask yourself the following questions: How will the groom stand out from the rest of the wedding party? Are the fathers going to be different from the groomsmen? How does the groom’s apparel relate to the color scheme of the wedding? How will the bride and groom’s outfits complement each other? In short, what is the big picture and how do the men in the party fit into that picture?

Perhaps the groom is in a three-piece suit, the groomsmen in vests and slacks, and the fathers in two-piece suits while they all wear matching ties. Or maybe the boutonniere is what differentiates the groom from the rest of the party. Either way, the theme needs to address how the key individuals (the bride and groom) will be identified in a way that sets them apart yet blends with the rest of the party.

With few exceptions, weddings are always on a budget. Most of the time, the groom won’t be buying a $2,000 suit or tuxedo. It can also be difficult to ask every man in the wedding party to buy a new suit or tux.

If needed, get creative – there are alternatives! Don’t just let the small details slide.

Ideally everyone is in a suit for your big day, but if that’s not possible look for small ways to keep the group style in line. For the groomsmen, maybe only control certain aspects of their attire. Have them bring their own white shirt and dark slacks, for example, and just match the neckties. Or instead of doing all suits, do vests and pants.

No matter your choice, even if you want them all in suits, there are plenty of great options that can fit into your budget. Look for group packages, which can save you a lot of money in the long run. For example, we have affordable wedding packages.

To conclude, your wedding is a big event that’s highly personal! Groom’s wear shouldn’t be neglected or left to the very end of wedding planning.

Get proactive. If you’re renting, shop around – find the perfect tux and try sizes on weeks in advance to ensure you can achieve the right fit and you’re not in between their standard sizing. If you’re going custom, start early and work directly with your Style Consultant to bring in all the right elements into your look.

Getting the look right will make you look better, but it will also make you feel better. Dress right and you’ll feel confident, smart, and ready for your big day.

Good luck!

Dress Code launched in early 2011 and is backed by Utah investor and equity partner Royal Street Investment & Innovation Center. The company reports thousands of customers across Utah, Nevada and Colorado and recently hit its 2-year mark in March of 2013. The company handcrafts and retails custom suits and dress shirts at luxury-level quality, but aggressive department store pricing.

“My goal has always been to align myself with brands I personally identify with and I am impressed with Dress Code’s unwavering focus on the customer experience and the opportunity we have over the next five years,” says Anderson. “I’m thrilled to be joining a company whose mission I fully believe in and think we have limitless opportunity in front of us.”

Anderson will be joining the company’s executive team and will report directly to CEO and Co-Founder Chase Murdock.

“This is possibly our most exciting hire yet,” says Murdock. “The first two years of our business were focused on refining our supply chain, product, and Style Consultant team and 2013 is all about how we communicate with our customers and build a brand that supports our mission.”

“With several years of experience in advertising, PR, and marketing, Adam’s going to help us find ways to be on the cutting edge of what it means to be a “next-gen” retailer. We need to better communicate who we are as an organization, how our unique shopping experience works, and all the aspects of our product value. If we can nail that, we’ll be able to do some great things in the industry.”

Anderson previously worked for both Senator Mike Lee and Congressman Jason Chaffetz and holds a BA in Communications from BYU.

About Dress Code:

Dress Code is a custom menswear brand that handcrafts and retails custom suits and dress shirts at luxury-level quality, but aggressive department store pricing. The company launched in 2011 in Orem, UT and was named the fastest growing custom menswear brand in the Western United States.

The holidays are upon us. If you haven’t started your holiday shopping yet, fret not: This quick trendy gift guide doubles as an instant shopping list for the important guy in your life. Especially the “he already has everything” hard-to-buy-for guy.

Shwood Canby Sunglasses, $135
I love unique products like this. These sunglasses from Shwood are made from… well, you guessed it: wood. Their collection contains a variety of customizable shades using a variety of exotic woods and lenses. I particularly like the look of the Zebrawood with gray glass.

Hex Drake Messenger Bag

Hex Drake Messenger Bag, $79.95
This stylish messenger bag is a fresh take on a classic accessory. Big enough to carry a 15” MacBook and then some, the herringbone wool construction makes a sturdy and fashionable tote for whatever he’s carrying. It also includes Hex’s PadPort, a pouch designed to carry an iPad for easy access on the go without having to remove the device. The best part? There’s no way anyone will mistake this for a murse.

Blackbird Necktie

I know what you’re thinking. Who wants a tie for Christmas? Just hear me out.

This worsted wool offering is the most fun you can loop under a collar. Its slim 2.75” width is perfect – not quite skinny, yet tastefully modern. If you’re not sold on the color, they have an entire winter collection you can check out. For the man who wears ties on a regular basis, this will be a particularly unique piece that’s sure to get compliments.

TheTieBar.com | Brushed Metal Tie Bar

You need one to go with that tie you just ordered. But it will add a classic look to any tie in his closet. Functional and simple, this may be the only thing his ensemble is missing. Excellence is in the details.

Armani Code | Ultimate Cologne

This new fragrance from Giorgio Armani builds upon the success of the original Armani Code, of which I am a big fan. The new scent contains more leather notes, making it flat out manlier. Based on guaiac wood, tonka bean, and vanilla, this scent is likely to be an instant classic.

For an even better value, look for it at department stores in holiday gift sets.

Chances are, he’s never heard of this stuff and doesn’t know what he’s missing. That’s what makes it such a great gift. This was an important element of my quest to end razor burn and bumps. More importantly, it has been known to rekindle passion for the manly ritual of shaving. This gift not only says “I care about your face,” but also reinforces the fact that he is a man. It’s time to graduate from over-processed synthetic shaving creams to a something your grandpa will covet. No one’s questioning his manliness.

Dress Code | Holiday Gift Card

Dress Code Gift Card, Varying Amounts Available
A gift card from Dress Code is arguably the best way to gift something that he can actually pick out. Not just from a catalog or store shelf, but actually design, right down to the buttonholes. The custom dress shirt, suit, or outerwear he designs will fit him better than anything he’s ever worn. This will be a gift he’ll never forget. Best of all, he’ll feel and look like the million bucks that you didn’t have to spend.

You rush to your closet, hair still slimy from that leave-in conditioner, and look around for your best outfit. Your poise is pursed with anticipation of a speech you will soon deliver, a fancy business dinner you are attending or maybe a classy date for which you do not want to be late. You busily bury your head into the back of that walk-in war room to find that one suit you bought last year for your nephew’s bar mitzvah.

There it remains, untouched with the yamaka still in the coat pocket.

Maybe you’ve put on a couple (10) pounds since then, but you suddenly realize it is the only suit you have. So on it goes and off you go…

When you stand to give your speech, you take one too many looks to see if the buttons are going to burst, when you sit down to dinner, you think you feel a tear in the pants and you keep noticing your date look at the cake smudge you’ll find once you get home.

The King’s Speech, 2010

On one of those very reputable quote websites (where anyone can upload anything without a citations), Mark Twain said, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” Now while my parents would disagree (considering I feel I have had some sort of minor influence on society and I wasn’t created through a fully clothed relationship, per se), I would agree with the first portion. In fact, so would science.

In a study on attire’s effect on potential partner’s attraction level, 112 women were studied. There were three levels of dress for men (low, medium, high) and a six ratings of attraction (coffee convo, date, just sex, relationship potential, marriage potential, and marriage). When a man was dressed in a “high” level of fashion, women were statistically more attracted to them and rated more marriage potential and marriage levels of attraction than medium or low.

Those are the findings, but here is the real-life rational. There are three attributes that every well-dressed man wears so well:

1. A man who is dressed well is more confident because he knows he looks good. A suit with a ticket-pocket is just classy. No need to look in mirrors or down to re-check.

2. A man who is dressed well pays attention to details. The pocket square matches the tie (not perfectly) matches the socks and even matches the suit liner. That man probably pays attention to other details (perhaps financial, emotional, physical…). A good man is found in the details, as is a good suit.

3. A man who is dressed well looks stable. It isn’t always cheap to look good. People who don’t admit that, at least know that.

So as Hannukah is coming to a decided conclusion, perhaps you should treat yourself to a more suitable speech, a slicker dinner and a smoother date. It’s not just time for new years resolutions, it is time for last year’s restitution.

You will cheer and they will hoot with fits, for this is the year you buy a suit which fits.

Every November, men across the nation unite to take part in growing out their facial hair. Their reasons are many. For some, it is in revolt to clean-cut corporatism. Some attempt to combat colder weather with the best defense Mother Nature gave them. Others use the event to celebrate their manliness, promote a cause, or just exercise extreme laziness when it will be least noticed. I even know a few guys who grow a beard just to photobomb family photos on Turkey Day.

Regardless of your purpose, there are steps you can take to ensure that you look like a man and not a Neanderthal. The reason that would be important should be obvious to the man reading a men’s style blog.

Before we go any further, I need to address the purists. If you are among those who believe that No-Shave November consists of only 1 rule inherent to the name, read no further.

Let’s get down to it.

1 Manscape

A little light trimming tames the unruliest of beards. Two areas of particular focus include the neck and around the mouth. Keeping these areas well maintained broadcasts subtle refinement. Plus, it keeps your whiskers out of the way when talking, eating, and kissing.

Purists consider this notion antithesis, but I think we get away with it on a technicality: cutting unwanted hair with clippers or a beard trimmer in no way violates the prohibition on shaving.

2 Shape

One of the biggest obstacles with unrestricted beard growth is that some whiskers seem to have a mind of their own. Scraggly facial hair sticks out at all angles, bare patches appear, and hair doesn’t always grow in evenly.

Enter beard and mustache wax. Use a gentle wax to enforce obedience on your face so that the hairs lay straight in the same direction. Certain waxes also promote hair health and add luster.

Wax is applied after washing, drying, and combing the beard. Be sure to apply in small amounts to avoid a greasy, shiny look.

Please take me seriously.

3 Watch Your ‘Do

Just because you’re growing your facial hair doesn’t mean you neglect cutting the rest of the hair on your head. We’ve all seen men sporting the disastrous combo of unkempt hair and beards.

Don’t be a disheveled mess. It’s okay to visit your barber, just make it absolutely clear that they are not to touch anything below mid-ear level. Certain hairstyles can complement the beard and project the sense that you’ve thought this out. If you’re unsure about whether a style will work, ask whatever woman you trust most in life.

4 Wardrobe is Key

Apparel for comedic use only.

People tend to overlook this one. Outside of No-Shave November, your wardrobe says a lot about you. During No-Shave November, the effect is amplified.

So watch what you wear. Your Saturday morning run to the store in sweats and a KFC-stained t-shirt may seem like no biggie. Let me assure you, unless your goal is to look like Zach Galifianakis on a Colonel’s Secret Recipe bender, this look will never help you.

My point here is that you need to take extra care with what you wear. Many people associate facial hair with laziness, so don’t give them any ammo to feed their misconception. Things that you might wear any other month of the year may not work out well in November. Bulky sweaters/hoodies, sweat pants, and gym shorts should all be off limits in public (unless you’re going to the gym and directly home).

5 Find a Cause

Find a reason to participate. There are causes that use beards and mustaches to promote and raise awareness. The most prominent example is Movember, an organization that seeks to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer. Men who participate, called Mo Bros, grow their facial hair and seek sponsors to raise money for the cause. I’ve heard of entire offices where men get on board with Movember or another local cause.

If you participate to further a cause, let people know. People admire charitable work and your participation will reflect positively in their minds.

Conclusion

There you have it. These 5 steps will maintain your appearance while participating in the American institution known as No-Shave November. Happy hair growing.

OREM, Utah, USA, November 12, 2012 – Dress Code, the Utah company that brings custom menswear direct to its customers has announced a Logan UT location supported by its Style Consultant network that now stretches into Brigham City, Hyrum, Hyde Park, and the greater Cache County area.

The company operates a team of Style Consultants that act in place of storefronts by bringing a tape measure, hundreds of fabric swatches, and personalized style guidance straight to its customers’ homes and offices. The new Logan location now adds to the company’s current reach into Salt Lake City, Park City, Utah Valley, and Las Vegas.

“This is a market we’re really excited about,” says VP of Business Development Joel Gillespie. “Logan has a great student and and it wraps up our goal to have a Style Consultant in every major city in Utah.”

Last month Dress Code announced the closing of a seed investment round with Park City-based Royal Street Investment and Innovation Center. The company is focused on broadening its reach to Denver, Las Vegas, and San Francisco in the next 12 months.

“We’re expand our reach and spread the word about what we offer,” continues Gillespie. “We’re bringing a better product, but we’re offering it at a lower price than our off-the-rack competitors. A custom suit focuses on fit, which is the most important factor to consider when shopping for a suit. And at $300 our suits make this consideration easy.”

The company is headquartered in Orem, UT and is just a year and a half years old.

DOMO throws wild Halloween parties and for this year’s company event Josh James asked us to replicate some of the suits from the Gangnam Style YouTube video. We were excited for the challenge and had way too much fun designing these suits.

If you’re one of the very few people left out there who haven’t seen Gangnam Style yet, give it a watch first. Dress Classy and Dance Cheesy is Psy’s motto for the song he says. And the suits from this video are definitely sure to turn heads. Classy might not be the right word, but hey – there are definitely some details to appreciate from some of the suits in this video.

Here’s our take on the suits – we think we did a pretty good job! And we’ve also posted some shots of the suits in action at DOMO’s Halloween event. Take a look!

We had so much fun at our last Pop-Up in Denver that we’ve decide it’s about time we come back! So on October 25, 26, and 27 we will be back in the Denver area hosting our second Pop-Up in Colorado!

Pop-Ups are the only way for our fans in the Denver area to get suited up by Dress Code right now, so we’re encouraging everyone in Colorado to make the trip and come out to be measured by our Style Consultants. We’re coming out with the same great experience we offer our Members that live in an area we service: Hundreds of fabrics, custom styles, and design options combined with a careful measuring process that ensures each product we create fits you perfectly right out of the box. Fittings are fun and we hope you’ll come out and join us!

We’re only doing 3 days of back-t0-back fittings and space is starting to fill up. If you’re ready, contact us below to request an appointment. First come, first served!

If you live outside an area we service Pop-Ups are the only way for New Members to get measured up and order from Dress Code. Most Pop-Ups are held in an office building or hotel conference room, where we lay out hundreds of fabrics and help our New Members design a custom suit or any of our custom products. We give as much (or little) direct as needed so that each product we create is specifically designed and cut to each customer. We even back it up with an industry-leading guarantee.

Once your measurements are taken, they’re stored on file and you’re a Member for life, which gives you exclusive access to custom suits, shirts, and more at the click of a button.

Most Pop-Up appointments last about 45 minutes. We occasionally offer specials if you bring a friend or colleague with you and help us spread the word.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – October 25 – 27

9AM – 8PM, by appointment only.

Our Pop-Ups are most successful when our fans come out and bring a friend or two to get suited up together. If you’d like to bring a friend or colleague, take advantage of some of these great deals that we’ve created to say thank you for helping us spread the word about our Pop-Up:
